  • Upward Bound
    TRiO Upward Bound will serve 140 students from eight high schools throughout the IECC District during 2012-13. The schools include East Richland H.S., Edwards County H.S., Fairfield H.S., Lawrenceville H.S., Newton Community H.S., Oblong H.S., Robinson H.S. and West Richland H.S.
  • Class of 2010
    100% (24 of 24) of the TRiO Upward Bound seniors were accepted into a postsecondary institution. 67% (16 of 24) of the TRiO Upward Bound seniors enrolled at a postsecondary institution for the 2010 summer semester.
  • Academic Year Trip
    Students participated in an overnight trip to St. Louis, MO where they saw Billy Elliot at The Fox Theatre, and visited the St. Louis Zoo.
  • '11-12 SY Program
    79 students participated in TRiO Upward Bound Summer Programs that ended with a four day / three night trip to Chicago, IL.
  • Summer Trip 2011
    Students went to Chicago, IL where they visited Shedd Aquarium, John Hancock Observatory, Field Museum of Natural History, Medieval Times, Museum of Science and Industry, Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier and took two boat rides on the Seadog and Sprit of Chicago.
  • College Visits
    During the Program Year and Summer Year students will have the chance to visit colleges. This past year Upward Bound visited DePaul University, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Lincoln Trail College, Wabash Valley College, Southern Indiana University, Lake Land College and the Illinois Institute of Art Schaumburg.
  • Purpose

     

    TRiO Upward Bound Program through Illinois Eastern Community Colleges is a federally funded college preparatory program designed to provide academic support, personal/career counseling and cultural enrichment to participants who have the academic ability for completion of post-secondary degree. The ultimate goal of the TRiO Upward Bound Program is to generate the pre-collegiate academic skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. Services are provided to high school participants during an Academic Year Component, a Summer Year Component and a Summer Bridge Component.

  • Admission

     

    Application for admission to the TRiO Upward Bound Program through Illinois Eastern Community Colleges is open to students in specified target high schools in Crawford, Edwards, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, and Wayne counties.

     

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

    • Meet Citizenship Requirement defined by the U.S. Department of Education and;
    • Be a Potential First Generation College Student and/or;
    • Meet the Income Requirement defined by the U.S. Department of Education and/or;
    • Demonstrate an Academic Need determined by the TRiO Upward Bound Program.

     

    CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENT

    • Is a citizen or national of the United States.
    • Is a permanent resident of the United States.
    • Is in the United States for other than a temporary purpose and provides evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of his or her intent to become a permanent resident.
    • Is a permanent resident of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
    • Is a resident of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshal Islands, or the Republic of Palau.

     

    FIRST-GENERATION REQUIREMENT

    • Neither Natural Parent having earned a Bachelor's Degree.

     

    INCOME REQUIREMENT

    • Meet Family Taxable Income guidelines as established by the U.S. Department of Education.

     

    ACADEMIC ABILITY REQUIREMENT

    • Has a need for academic support as determined by the TRiO Upward Bound Program, in order to pursue successfully a program of education beyond high school.

     

    AGE REQUIREMENT

    • At the time of initial selection, has completed the eighth grade but has not entered the twelfth grade and is at least 13 years old but not older than 19.

  • Academic Year Components provide:

     

    • After-school tutorial/counseling sessions
    • Four Saturday workshops at Olney Central College
    • Financial aid and scholarship information and assistance
    • Study skill and test prep assistance
    • Individualized career/college counseling and information
    • One overnight educational, college, cultural trips
    • Leadership opportunities
    • $40 monthly stipend (earned by participants for full participation in all program activities)

    Classic Summer Program (summer after Freshman Year of high school)

     

    • Academic instruction, counseling and tutoring
    • Social, recreational and leadership activities
    • Major summer trip
    • $100 stipend (earned by participants for full participation in all program activities)
    • Daily round trip transportation

     

    College Exploration Summer Program (summer after Sophomore Year of high school)

     

    • Enrollment in a three credit hour course at Olney Central College
    • College information, activities and speakers
    • Weekly college field trips
    • Social, recreational and leadership activities
    • Major summer trip
    • $100 stipend (earned by participants for full participation in all program activities)
    • Daily round trip transportation

     

    Career Internship Summer Program (summer after Junior Year of high school)

     

    • Enrollment in a three credit hour course at Olney Central College
    • Practical experience at an approved work site
    • Career information, activities and speakers
    • Social, recreational and leadership activities
    • Major summer trip
    • Two $250 stipends ($500) (earned by participants for full participation in all program activities and successful completion of internship work hours)
    • Daily round trip transportation

  • Summer Bridge Component (summer after high school graduation):

     

    • Enrollment in up to six (6) credit hours on any Illinois Eastern Community College Campus
    • Social, recreational and leadership activities
    • Major summer trip
    • $100 stipend (earned by participants for full participation in all program activities)
